New Minor Forcing and the weak 6-4 ----------------- -------- After the auction 1(suit)-1(major); 1NT- or 1(minor)-1H; 1S-1NT; or 1(minor)-1(major); 2(minor)- 2(new minor) is used to ask partner to describe their hand further: Partner rebids: -2(major): minimum of rebid with 3 card support -3(major): maximum of rebid with 3 card support -2NT: minimum with less than 3 card support -3NT: maximum with less than 3 card support -3(minor): less than 3 card support -other: less than 3 card support [generally partner rebids at the two level with a minimum or at the three level with a maximum] NOTE: New Minor Forcing may also be used after opener rebids 2NT. The New Minor bidder should have either: 1) 5+ major with invitational or more values, OR 2) a game-forcing hand Here are some examples of (1) after the sequence 1C-1H; 1NT (12-14)-2D --S: KJx/ H: AJxxx/ D: Qxx/ C: xx you are looking for game in either hearts or NT NT opposite a maximum. --S: KQx/ H: AKJxxx/ D: Kx/ C: Qx you are looking for slam in hearts or NT after the sequence 1D-1H; 2D-3C --S: Kxx/ H: AJxxx/ D: Qx/ C: xxx hearts, [gulp] NT, or diamonds? --S: Kxx/ H: AJxxx/ D: Qxxx/ C: x hearts, or diamonds? Here are some examples of (2) after the sequence 1C-1H; 1NT (12-14)-2D; --S: Qx/ H: KQxx/ D: A/ C: AQxxxx over partner's rebid a simple rebid of clubs would show your slam interest in clubs (or NT). 1C-1H; 1NT-2D; 2NT-3C say. This is a nice way of still being able to show good club support. --S: x/ H: KQxx/ D: AKQxxxx/ C: xx Here you rebid diamonds. NOTE: if partner simply rebids their major then this shows a weak hand. Say, 1C-1H; 1NT- 2H is weak. ********************************************************************** The Weak 6-4 ------------ This is a corollary to New Minor Forcing. If bidding the New Minor would have been forcing, then jumping in the New Minor shows a weak hand with 6 of the minor and 4 of the major. Examples: 1C-1H; 1NT- 3D shows 6 diamonds, 4 hearts and a weak hand 1H-1S; 1NT- 3C shows 6 clubs, 4 spades and a weak hand 1C-1S; 2C- 3D shows 6 diamonds, 4 spades and a weak hand 1D-1S; 2D- 4C shows 6 clubs, 4 spades and a weak hand
